Emulate real-world network conditions

Spirent's ProLab IMS Testing Suite is the foundation to Elevate’s core IMS software, emulating a wide range of real-world network conditions for interactive or automated testing of voice and video over LTE on mobile devices. Resident on Spirent’s Wireless Test Station, it provides and maintains the expected Quality of Service (QoS) for LTE signaling, security, media, and network topology.


For LTE chipset and handset vendors it is important to have a feature testing system for IMS UE applications and IMS servers capable of simulating signaling and media, including end user experience and call features testing. For this segment it is of crucial importance to be able to quickly and reliably pinpoint and resolve quality-related problems as they occur.

For service providers it is important to perform interoperability and end user experience testing, audio metrics, and the simulation of thousands of handsets. Providing a high level of quality can present a considerable challenge. It is essential to ensure VoLTE service readiness.

Elevate ProLab IMS Testing Suite provides a complete solution that includes IMS Core, XCAP Server, IMS UE, network impairment and media quality testing, as well as media analysis. It offers audio and video quality measurement and video telephony testing, including motion level and codec testing, along with IMS/LTE test cases employing various scenarios to emulate the network’s UE and IMS Core, QoS, and interoperability. Elevate ProLab comes with built-in scripts, including scripts for interoperability test cases developed by the IMTC IMS Activity Group, a leading VoLTE test consortium. Covered areas include LTE voice call establishment and supplementary services, media testing, network impairment, and more.

UE VoLTE Simulation

Elevate ProLab comes pre-packaged with an abundance of plug-and-play scripts and media files. This rich collection of ready- to-use test cases represents a wealth of expertise and know-how for performing comprehensive and exhaustive scenarios. The built-in scripts perform a wide variety of test case simulations, including SIP, IMS, RTP, Audio and Video testing. The built-in media scenarios simulate media from various vendors in various formats, as well as a variety of different codecs including: AMR-WB, AMR-NB, H.264 and MPEG4.

Elevate ProLab comes with an advanced script language for developing complex and special case test scenarios capable of interacting with sophisticated IMS network topologies. Advanced scripting provides a vast range of testing capabilities, including authentication (AKA-MD5, AKA-V2, Digest), Security (SigComp, TLS, IPSec), IPv4, IPv6 Call Features, GSMA test cases such as IR.92, IR.94.. Audio and Video Test Cases based on AMR-WB, AMR-NB, H.263, H.264 and more.

Audio and Video Codec Analysis

Elevate ProLab is a powerful tool for evaluating audio and video codecs that helps the user simulate real audio and video payloads based on device input or pre-recorded audio files. It includes the following features:

  • Designed to send real-time media, such as voice and video, over UDP/IP
  • Uses Real-Time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP) as a companion protocol to RTP for gathering statistics on a media connection
  • RTP/RTCP (S-RTP) add-on data can be encrypted to enable improved privacy against eavesdropping
  • Provides an option to simulate different types of:
    • Audio codecs including G.711a-law/mu-law, G.723.1, G.728, G.729, GSM-AMR, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, and full band EVS
    • Video codecs including H.263, H.263+, MPEG-4, and H.264 / AVC
  • Provides an option  to generate different types of video codec resolution from QCIF to 1080p

New EVS codec testing includes options to configure codec rate (SC-VBR), a voice/sound activity detector (VAD), a comfort noise generation (CNG) system, and an error concealment (EC) mechanism to neutralize the detrimental effects of transmission errors resulting in lost packets.  The system can also configure the EVS channel-aware mode, which further improves frame/packet error resilience.

IMS Core Architecture

The Elevate ProLab IMS Core emulation solution implements the logic and functionality of the Call Session Control Function Registrar, Proxy and Security, while using a powerful tool to configure the behavior of the various IMS policies. The IMS Core add-on implements the Call Session Control Function (CSCF) Servers and Home Subscriber Servers (HSS). The IMS Server solution uses the IMS Proxy Agent as its CSCF and HSS, while using its powerful capabilities to configure the behavior of the various CSCFs (P-CSCF, S-CSCF, I-CSCF).

Emergency services: the IMS Server Emergency module provides tools for testing UE's in emergency call scenarios specified by 3GPP TS 24.229.
