An article co-authored by Richard Catmur, my colleague at Spirent, was published last week in GPS World. It is a great introduction to the test methodologies currently prescribed for enabling location services on mobile devices. The article provides a well-rounded view of the lab based testing standards and also highlights the need for real world or real-world recording-based verification. The article also discusses the need for test standards addressing the growing adoption of hybrid location technology in smartphones.

As I mentioned in an earlier blog posting (Dogfooding the KB), we here at Spirent use the Knowledge Base (KB) for our own research and knowledge sharing purposes. We’ve had a formal process in the Spirent Support Services team for creating and improving KB content since the launch of the KB, and we just launched a new project that will further improve the content we deliver from the KB. Remember the days when mainframe computers were hidden away in a locked “computer room”, accessible only to the guy with the pocket protector? Many of you reading this probably weren’t even born back in those days and can’t imagine a time when users didn’t have direct access to a computer. “Back in my day”, we submitted “data processing requests” and waited for results in the form of reams of paper to show up on our desks.
