Highlights and Take-Aways from OmniAir Consortium’s Plugfest by the Bay

Last Week, the third WAVE-DSRC plugfest took place in the Bay Area. While previous editions of the plugfest were sponsored by the US Department of Transportations (USDOT), as part of its Certification Operating Council (COC) project, this time around the event was organized by OmniAir, with private funding and support from several sponsors, including Spirent.

With 174 participants from more than 40 different organizations, the event was a real success and marked another milestone in the deployment of 802.11p-based V2X technology to enhance driver safety.

This time the event was hosted at UL facilities in Fremont, Ca. Kendra Pridemore, Andrew Harding and the UL team did a great job in accommodating the participants and ensuring that a solid test infrastructure including a GPS repeater was in place.

Here are some key highlights and take-aways of this event from our perspective:

Overall the technology is reaching maturity with more and more devices showing continuous improvement since the first plugfest in Nov 2016 in Novi, Mi.

  • Security—One of the main topics of the event was security, with the goal of assessing the implementation of the IEEE1609.2 standard by the device vendors, especially with regard to the management of security certificates and the need for clarifying certain aspects of the standard that left room for interpretation.
  • Some technical challenges in getting the security certificates used for testing in time
  • Support of security features in 1609.2 and J2945.1 starting to be visible, with some vendors effectively passing all testcases
  • Innovations
  • The event started with a one-day policy workshop with several panels with some very interesting discussions around topics such as the status of V2X regulation and policies in the different regions of the globe, pilot deployments and the comparison with Cellular V2X (C-V2X) using LTE-V or 5G
  • Great networking opportunities abound for all participants with some enriching and inspiring contributions from the panel members
  • Training Track, Parallel workshop sessions
  • The Spirent TTsuite-WAVE-DSRC featuring Cohda Wireless’ MK5 DSRC radio and the Spirent GNSS simulator GSS6700 were successfully used to test On-Board Units (OBUs) and Road-Side Units (RSUs) from a total of 24 manufacturers, making it the most demanded test equipment at the event.
  • To accommodate some vendors who wished to test at least once with the Spirent system, the Spirent team provided three additional test sessions beyond the planned schedule, to the satisfaction of those vendors who could collect some valuable input for improving their devices.

  • Both vendors and test labs indicated why they were keen to test with Spirent equipment
  • “Spirent’s test equipment is strict in its interpretation of the COC test requirements and has helped us identifying and fixing errors in our system by clearly pinpointing the root error cause. We have not seen anything comparable with other test equipment,” indicated one OBU manufacturer.
  • “The testing process with Spirent’s test equipment can be fully automated and works with Command-Line Interface (CLI) as well as with a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Also, the evaluation of test results is automated and facilitates the certification process for us as test lab. This helps us saving costs and will help make the OmniAir certification process clear for all parties.”
  • There were some concerns raised by some vendors because they were obtaining different results for a few test cases between different test tools. This is an indication that there needs to be harmonization at this level, in particular regarding the interpretation of the stimuli to the DUT via the Test Control Interface (TCI) commands.
