Position location capabilities using GPS technology are becoming increasingly important as the new revenue-generating products and services such as Location Based Services (LBS), logistics and road tolling, are deployed. Applications now encompass a broad range of markets, including wireless and telecom, automotive, military and space. In all cases, maximising position location accuracy and availability is a fundamental requirement.

The necessity for high quality signal generation to test GNSS products in a production environment is often overlooked. Spirent produces a range of high quality, high reliability signal generation equipment for this purpose. Commercial products from mobile handsets to in-car navigation systems need to be tested using consistent, reliable and accurate signal sources in order to ensure a consistent high quality product leaves your factory.

Production testing also needs to be fast, reliable and cost effective. Spirent production test GPS simulators have been developed with the demands of manufacturing in mind and support single-channel or multi-channel testing, including GPS L1/L2, with the minimum of operator intervention. For A-GPS testing, assistance data consistent with the test scenario is available.

The majority of satellite navigation applications utilise the GPS C/A code. To this end Spirent offer a number of units for the Commercial and Production markets. GPS receiver manufacturers, and manufacturers of chipsets and modules, for use in GPS enabled devices, have recognised the need for their products to undergo extensive testing of their operation in a semi-automated or fully automated series of tests during the manufacture process. This becomes particularly important when the receiver or mobile device is to be used in an application where safety of life is a factor. For example, E911 (US) and E112 (Europe) compliant devices.

Other applications include mobile devices (cell phones, pda's etc), vehicle tracking and safety and military applications, where the full and correct operation of each receiver must be verified in manufacturing before deployment.
