TEST SOLUTIONS FOR GPS/GLONASS & Wi-Fi INTEGRATION IN MOBILE DEVICES
GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou-2, Sensors and Wi-Fi Positioning are combining to make location aware technology in mobile devices a must-have feature. Spirent is the leading provider of test systems for characterisation and evaluation of performance in mobile devices.
GPS performance in mobile devices has always been better in open areas than built-up urban areas where visibility of the sky is poor. The lack of reliable performance in urban canyons, and particularly indoors, has caused mobile device developers to look at ways of improving these weaknesses.
The GLONASS constellation has been receiving recent focused investment by Russia and is now all but complete. Many consumer receiver technology and device manufacturers are therefore starting to look seriously at adding GLONASS to GPS to improve availability in more difficult areas.
Similarly, China’s BeiDou-2 system is rapidly developing which will add greater benefits initially in the APAC region, but eventually globally when BeiDou-3 is operational.
In addition, Wi-Fi positioning is gaining acceptance as a way of supplementing GPS or GPS/GLONASS performance. Wi-Fi positioning is a natural complement to GNSS as Wi-Fi is most effective in dense urban areas where GNSS is weakest. Critically, Wi-Fi positioning also works effectively indoors.
Many leading devices are already equipped with GPS and Wi-Fi today, and increasingly GLONASS and BeiDou-2 is also being added as well.
