The flexibility of Ethernet service offerings requires a new approach to service assurance that addresses all aspects of the Ethernet life cycle.

The flexibility of Ethernet service offerings requires a new approach to service assurance that addresses all aspects of the Ethernet life cycle. Communications service providers need a service assurance strategy that enables them to validate quality of service (QoS), identify problem areas and efficiently troubleshoot Ethernet service issues.

What to Test

As part of their service assurance strategy, network operators should perform:

Active testing—isolate and resolve critical Ethernet performance issues. End-to-end Ethernet QoS can be validated via:

  • Layer 3 Two Way Active Measurement Protocol (TWAMP) traffic generation
  • RFC 2544 testing
  • Y.1564 testing
  • Ethernet OAM tests, such as 802.1ag and Y.1731 loopback and link trace, along with Y.1731’s multi-cast loopback and delay measurement
  • Connectivity check (Network to Enterprise)
  • Loopback control on the probe (L2/L3 port/sub-port (vlan) loopback)
  • Ping and traceroute

Passive testing—monitor network performance and sectionalize trouble via:

  • Traffic visibility—VLAN statistics, CoS, frame sizes, protocol distribution, utilization
  • Data analysis—top talkers, top applications, connection matrix, etc.
  • VoIP analysis—signaling and voice analysis/quality
  • Video analysis—channel operation and video analysis/quality
  • Capture/Decode—deep-dive analysis

Performance monitoring—measure Ethernet QoS via the use of small bandwidth active tests such as:

  • Ethernet OAM Loopback Message (LBM)
  • Ethernet OAM Delay Message (DMM)
  • Layer 2 frame based stream
  • Ping
  • Layer 3 packet based stream
  • TWAMP (RFC 5357)

Spirent Solutions

  • Spirent TestCenter Live is an integrated Ethernet performance monitoring, test and diagnostic solution. Network operators can access data—both actively and passively—from Spirent TestCenter Live probes, existing network elements and third-party OSSes. From mobile backhaul, to business services, to global IP networks, communications service providers around the world use Spirent TestCenter Live to efficiently support Ethernet service delivery.

Solutions

White Papers

  • Ethernet Mobile Backhaul and Ethernet Service Verification for Service Providers and MSOsSpirent understands the intricacies of the mobile Ethernet backhaul network and the services that traverse them.
  • Ethernet Service Verification for Mobile CarriersThe evolution of today‘s network has seen the migration of Ethernet technology from the LAN to MAN as service providers have embraced Ethernet architecture as a replacement for traditional TDM services.
  • Service Provider Tactics to Ensure SLA-backed Ethernet Services WhitePaperEthernet has opened up several new markets to MSOs that have traditionally been the domain of traditional telco providers.
  • Ethernet Services Operational OverviewProviders are discovering an operational efficiency gap left from TDM to Ethernet/IP migration efforts. This gap is of concern as it increases opex at a time when revenue per bit is declining.
  • Translating SLAs into Operational Requirements WhitepaperEthernet has opened up several new markets to MSOs that have traditionally been the domain of traditional telco providers.

  • Netherlands’ Largest Cable Operator Selects Spirent to Validate Service Availability and Backbone PerformanceOct 20, 2010New Orleans, LA. – October 20, 2010 – Ziggo, The Netherlands’ largest cable operator, selected Spirent Communications to help monitor network performance and SLA conformance. Spirent’s comprehensive solution for active and passive testing enables Ziggo to validate service availability and Ethernet backbone performance.
  • Performance and Operational Challenges of the IP Backhaul can Compromise New Mobile Data Services DeliverySep 30, 2010Innovations in mobile user devices and growth in 3G/LTE services is driving network operators to move to an IP/Ethernet backhaul to help deal with the onslaught of new mobile data service. However, if the infrastructure isn’t ready to deal with the technology and operational issues Ethernet brings, both subscriber quality of experience (QoE) and potential revenue streams from new data services can be compromised.
  • Spirent Advances Deployment of Carrier Ethernet Services by Enabling Comprehensive Interoperability Testing Sep 20, 2010As Ethernet’s role in metro and wide area networks, storage networks, mobile backhaul and smart grids continues to expand rapidly, Spirent is helping to validate performance of Carrier Ethernet offerings for business and consumers. To that end, Spirent is supporting the European Advanced Networking Test Center AG (EANTC) in an interoperability event that tests devices from two dozen leading vendors of Ethernet equipment. The results are being showcased at Carrier Ethernet World Congress 2010, in Warsaw, Poland, September 20-23.
  • Avoid Hidden Operational Surprises in the Ethernet Mobile BackhaulAug 26, 2010Free Spirent webinar offers service providers and MSOs tactical insight into operational models for scalability, OPEX reduction, automation & Quality of Experience (QoE)
